In the final seconds, pure elation broke out for Chelsea and interim manager Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández stabbed home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola ranting in frustration and handed the temporary Chelsea manager a truly golden moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane could be billed as the Premier League's greatest managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to warm the 40-year-old in his dotage.

A Glaring Contrast in Pedigree

On the City bench was the generation's pre-eminent figure, a man with 40 trophies for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, taking charge of his 1,012th match. In the visitors' dugout, stood a former coach at non-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and stepped up to make his senior managerial bow after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a host of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task began as a mission that seemed close-to-impossible.
